Born in 1951 on a farm/ranch in central South Dakota, JL Whitaker has managed to pack plenty of life experience into his years. He graduated from South Dakota State University with a degree in Animal Science and spent two years overseas with the USAF during the Vietnam War. His extensive travels across the U.S., combined with varied work experiences—from chef and baker to laying railroad tracks and working in coal and oil fields—provide a rich background for his storytelling. With over 22 years in the U.S Geological Survey and five years teaching Environmental Science and Surveying, Whitaker’s diverse career lends authenticity to his writing. Now residing in Pierre, South Dakota, he is married to his wife of over 40 years, Lynne, with two sons and six grandchildren. His first novel is the historical fiction book titled “The Search For a Diamond.” It is an accurate historical fiction novel of the Civil War.
